Billy Strayhorn died 44 years ago today. Here for you is one of his most famous compositions, Take The A Train, played by the Duke Ellington Orchestra at their awesome 1956 Newport Jazz Festival performance. (That’s Ray Nance on the trumpet.)
And here’s Duke’s eulogy for Billy:

i returned home from a long day of travels, south dakota - minneapolis - milwaukee - boston, to find my fridge stocked with a six-pack of narragansett lager and the cupboard with just-add-water pancake mix. james of ten days ago, you are a fucking genius.
I liked this post so much, I have returned to tumblr after an eight-month hiatus just to reblog it.
Har har.

He’s walking on Primrose Hill, London, in 1963.
The photograph was taken by Bill Brandt.
